First Junior Players Make Their Senior Deput

Four years ago, Swords RFC commenced their junior rugby programme, fielding their first U-14 team later that year. On Saturday, many months of hard work came to fruition as three of that original side made the transition to senior level. It was a momentous occasion for all involved at the club, none more so than coach and president, Richie Cowman.

‘We've invested so much time, effort and finance into our youth system in the last few years and it really has paid off,' Cowman said.‘It's great to finally see the likes of Danny John, Ray Boland and Dave Reilly coming through and it's even more encouraging when you think this is only the start. ‘We have some excellent talent in our Under-18s side, who I'm sure will follow in the lads' footsteps and make the transition.'

Swords took the unprecedented step of employing their own youth development officer last season, making a significant financial investment at the same time. It looks to be money well spent, if days like Saturday are to be repeated in the coming years at ALSAA. ‘Our aim is to bring rugby to the town of Swords and at the same time grow the club from the grassroots upwards,' Cowman added. ‘We've a bright future ahead of us.'
