Review of the Season 2006-07

The First team competed for the third season in the Remax Leinster League Division 3, a season was one of transition and consolidation under the inaugural leadership of Tony Lawless and captaincy of Matt Child. Early season losses to Clondalkin and Malahide were followed by a draw in the North Dublin derby game with Balbriggan. Swords recorded their first win at home to Tullamore at the end of October. There were further defeats at Birr and Rathdrum before the squad rallied before the Christmas break recording back to back victories against Gorey and CYM.

The best display of the season was undoubtedly the comprehensive 59-7 win against Athboy with the home side racking up eight tries.  This was followed by a win against Wexford before a final league defeat against the eventual league winners Tullow, our nemesis from the previous season when the defeat ended any promotion hopes. The second team competed in the Leinster Provincial Seconds League Division 3 under the captaincy and management of Leo Price.  In a chequered season, highlights included wins against Stillorgan and Clondalkin and a hard fought draw against Boyne.
In the Youth section, Swords competed at U16 level this year.

The team played a number of games and had notable successes against Balbriggan and Athboy. Swords were entered into the Towns Cup for the first time.  Unfortunately they drew Roscrea in the first round and were defeated 27-9.  The team then competed in the Provincial Towns Plate competition but lost to Newbridge 33-19.

In the Anderson Cup, Swords lost 24-8 to Portlaoise and the Fox Cup, were defeated 34-12 in the semi against Old Belvedere. The club embarked on their end of season tour to Mallorca with a 25-strong touring party over the  May bank holiday weekend enjoying the hospitality of Rugby Club Ponet and ex-club man Fede Sarnovich. Match day saw an epic battle against the hosts with Swords upholding the touring tradition of winning our tour games finishing 12-7 victors.

The inaugural annual club dinner held in ALSAA on in June. 180 members past and present and partners friends and general hangers on attended and a great night was had by all. During the celebrations awards were made to Mal Bradley for 1st XV Player of the Year, Jamie Gormley, 2nd XV Player of the Year and Loic Guiyomarc'h for Player's player of the year with Paddy Corkery beinginducted into the Hall of Fame.
