SWORDS' Under-19s got off to a fine start in their Leinster League campaign with a well-deserved win away to Ratoath.
Despite the Greens dominating play and controlling most elements of the game in the first half, a solitary penalty by Swords' kicker David Butler was all that separated the two teams at half-time.
A more focused visiting team emerged for the second half and their committed pack ensured that Swords used their rucks and mauls effectively to establish a platform for more penetrative attacking play.
A try by lock Anto Whelan 15 minutes into the second half was a well-deserved reward for the commitment of the pack, and this was converted in fine style by Butler.
After that, the Greens played a more adventurous style of rugby, with tries from winger Andy Keane and fly-half Shane O'Kelly completing the scoring.
This was a strong performance by the entire team, with Conor Keating catching the eye at lineouts and Gary McCormack showing good leadership in the forwards. Swords RFC U-19s train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the ALSAA Sports Complex from 7.30pm. New players are always welcome. |
