History made as Minis kick-off
History was made in Fingal last week as the first ever Swords RFC mini rugby teams made their bow.
Some 60 players pulled on the green shirt of the ALSAA-based side, as the club faced Ardee in a series of conditioned games.
It was the latest chapter in the remarkable success story the Swords' youth system is fast becoming.
In only his second season in the post, the club's Youth Development Officer, Jamie Gormly, has made enormous progress around the town.
Nearly every primary and secondary school in the area has been involved in with the club's coaching programme, while back at ALSAA, the youth ranks continue to swell.
What is even more satisfying, is the fact that Swords have build the foundations independently, financing the project themselves.
‘We have made significant investments in our youth rugby development in recent years and it's finally starting to show fruition,' Swords RFC president Richard Cowman said.
‘It's fantastic to see so many youngsters wearing the jersey and representing the club. Great credit has to go to Jamie and the schools he has worked with.'
With a growing population, Cowman was hopeful of further expansion both within the town of Swords itself and at the club.
‘This town has massive potential rugby-wise and we are eager to keep the momentum going,' he continued. ‘There's no reason why we can't build on the good start we have made. ‘These players are the future of our club and we look forward to many more days like this in the coming seasons.'
