Swords Minis About To Kick Off!

Youth rugby is about to take over the town of Swords in the coming weeks, with hundreds more youngsters set to pick up the oval ball. As the youth teams in Swords RFC and the local schools continue their progress, 'Mini' rugby (Under-12s and Under-10s) will kick off with a massive blitz day next week.

The Mini launch will take place on Saturday, November 17 from 10am to 12pm in Brackenstown, just outside Swords village, the new home of Mini Rugby in Swords. All boys aged 9 to 12 are welcome to come down, there'll be games and goodies for everyone and it's hoped a couple of surprise guests will also be there on the day.

‘This is going to be one of the most important and exciting events in the history of the club,' Swords RFC President, Richie Cowman said.‘We've been fielding youth rugby teams since we rebranded as Swords RFC in 2005.‘But we're now set to develop at the other end of the age spectrum. With a population of 43,000, a dozen schools and the sport becoming more and more popular, rugby is set to explode in Swords.

Swords RFC appointed their first ever Youth Development Officer, Jamie Gormly in September, and already several schools in the area have already taken part in the tag rugby programme.

Meanwhile up at ALSAA, the club youth structure for the current season has been finalised and the games are coming thick and fast. The Under-18s have been training hard since August and competing well in the North East League. Indeed, two youth players - Peter Carr and Conor Glynn - were recently sent forward for North East trials.

The Under-16s have also begun training, while the fledgling Under-14 side has been bolstered by a recruitment drive in the local schools.
