Swords 13
On a day more suited to mud wrestling than rugby, Swords grinded out their fifth win of the season away to CYM on Sunday.
The fact that the game went ahead was a feat in itself, as the glue top surface ensured the words ‘running rugby' would not be uttered upon reflection.
Dropped passes and scrums were the order of the day, but credit must go to Swords for the way they dug out the win in the circumstances.
Leading 3-0 at the break, through a Dave Cahill penalty, the Greens increased their lead with a well worked moved, finished off by prop Emmet O'Donnell and converted by Dave Flynn.
With Cahill in the sinbin, fullback Aiden Forkan marked his debut with a penalty of his own, to put the result beyond doubt.
So a game best forgotten, but a result that may have a serious bearing in the coming weeks, as the business end of the league campaign gets into full swing.
Swords remain very much in the mix and a string of wins will keep them in the hunt for one of the four promotion slots.
Next Sunday's home Towns Cup tie with Naas will be a welcome distraction, before the gallop for the final furlong commences.
