First Win For Seconds In Fingal Derby
North East Provincial Seconds League -
Swords 17 Skerries 10
Three well worked backline tries saw Swords second XV claim the honours against Fingal rival Skerries at ALSAA on Sunday.
The Greens recorded their first win of the season in style and have laid down a marker for the rest of the season, playing some fine rugby in the process.
It was Skerries who opened the scoring with a penalty in the first half, before Swords backline came to life and ground out a try for fullback Ronan Somers.
Outhalf Juris Beikmanis was off target with the conversion, leaving the hosts 5-3 up at the interval.
Beikmanis soon made amends with a superb try, running three quarters of the field before touching down.
Centre Ross McBride, who 's partnership with Olly McDonnell was another plus point for Swords, grabbed the third try soon after, Beikmanis tagging on the conversion to put Swords 17-3 ahead. The outhalf impressed throughout, while flankers Martin McDonnell and Herbie Croezen also caught the eye, particularly in the lineouts.
Skerries had the last word, albeit a late consolation, but it was Swords who took the win.
