Leinster League - Longford Game
LONGFORD 27
SWORDS 15
A MUCH improved performance, but unfortunately the same outcome for Swords as the men in green went down to a resilient Longford side on Sunday afternoon.
Welcoming back a number of key individuals, Swords travelled to the midlands in search of only their third win this season. In the end they left empty handed, but with their pride restored.
The welcome return of Richie Cowman saw the talismatic outhalf produce arguably his best display of the campaign so far.
Indeed, his backline were firing on all cylinders, particularly Luic Guimarch in the centre and wing David Cahill, who notched 10 of Swords' 15 points.
The home side took the lead in controversial circumstances when Ross McBride made a fine tackle on his own line, which forced the Longford fullback to knock on. But he grounded after his infringement and the referee awarded the try.
A defensive mix-up cost Swords a second try, but they responded well through Cahill, who finished the day with a try, conversion and penalty.
It was Cowman though who took the plaudits, with an outstanding performance at number 10.
Meanwhile, Swords seconds were unlucky to come out of their tie, going down
11-8 to the same opposition.
The greens conceded a try in the first minute, but were on top for the rest of the game and should have won.
The club have now set their sights on a good run in the prestigious Towns Cup, which begins in March. The Fingal side, who will enter the competition for the first time, will face Roscrea in the firsts cup, with Boyne the opposition at seconds level.
