Leinster League - Athboy Game
SWORDS 59
ATHBOY 7
EIGHT tries and their best display of the season saw Swords romp home against a struggling Athboy side at ALSAA on Sunday.
The Greens made light work of the Meath side, despite the blustery conditions, as forwards and backs combined to rack up their third win of the league campaign.
Outhalf Richie Cowman bagged a brace of tries, a feat matched by fullback Dave Cahill and prop Edward Flannery. Indeed, Flannery's 35 yard burst to the line for his second try was arguably the highlight of the match.
Elsewhere, wing James Kubran and forwards Fiachra Coll and Kieran Jones also grounded, while Cahill's near perfect seven conversions from eight attempts tagged on further points.
In a match where 'digging in' was very much the order of the day, the Swords pack rose to the occasion and dominated the proceedings up front.
Meanwhile, the home side's backline fired well for the second week running, with some fine off-loads keeping the ball alive.
Swords went into the break 19-7 ahead, though all the signs were there for a profitable second half and once the floodgates opened, the scores duly came.
With Swords racing ahead, the opposition retreated into their shells in the second half, allowing the Fingal men to rack up eight tries and a fourth bonus point.
The victory should give Swords added impetus as the season nears the cup stages and although hopes of promotion have been put to bed until next year, there is still plenty to play for.
The club enter the prestigious Towns Cup for the first time this season and have been drawn away to Roscrea in the first round.
More performances like Sunday's should send them off to Tipperary in the right frame of mind.
