Minis Starting Soon
RUGBY fever is mounting in Fingal ahead of next month’s World Cup and no more so than in Swords, where the local club are recruiting for the new season.
While Brian O¹Driscoll and co go through their preparations for New Zealand, another set of Greens are busy making plans for their next campaign and it promises to be another exciting year at Swords Rugby Club.
The men’s senior side are already back in training, drawing in a host of new faces to their ALSAA headquarters, while at the other end of the age spectrum, work is well underway at underage level.
Swords RFC received a massive boost last year when Fingal County Council provided the town’s first dedicated rugby pitch, located in the Holywell estate, which will play host to the first youth rugby session of the new season on Sunday, September 4th.
With that in mind, the club have extended an open invitation to any potential players and indeed coaches who may be looking to get into rugby.
“Swords Rugby Club has launched its plans for developing minis’ rugby in the community from the first weekend of September,” Swords youth coordinator, Martin Troy said.
“Mini rugby activities, aimed at children aged seven to 12, will be held throughout the 2011-2012 season and will be open to all. The club invites anyone interested in helping coach teams to get in contact. ” All that is required is an interest in coaching.
No experience is necessary as the club will arrange coaching courses for all its minis coaches and will provide guidance through its network of experienced coaches and referees. Further interest in the sport was generated last month when the club brought the Heineken Cup to the Pavilions Shopping Centre for the second time in two years, as part of a recruitment day.
Hundreds of fans, young and old, stopped by to have their photos taken with the biggest prize in northern hemisphere club rugby and it¹s hoped many of them will take to the field in Swords colours this season.
Further details of planned activities can be found on this website and anyone interested in getting in touch can mail info@swordsrfc.com.
Hi, my son is 4.5 yrs and started in Malahide RFC in Jan this year. We have just found out about the Swords RFC and as we live in Swords would prefer to change him to your club. I see your mini’s start from 7, do you take them before this?
